From the aptly named Frog Walk path to Otto’s Moroccan restaurant, there’s an atmosphere and flavour around the whole Sharrow Vale district that is interesting, historic, and compelling.

It makes sense to consider Sharrow Vale for your student accommodation if you are after a property in an area with jive, cuisine, and an easy commute to university or the teaching hospitals in Sheffield.

Sharrow Vale Shopping

The well-known or the quirky, there is both!  From Londis and Tesco Metro to the Porter Brook Bookshop and Pom Kitchen, Sharrow Vale has a wide array of shops. It is well known for those wanting something a bit special and boutique, and the Sharrow Vale Market is a popular street market held three times a year.

There are also post offices, a gym, a medical centre surgery, and the Sheffield Botanical Gardens nearby as well as a good range of coffee shops, pubs, and restaurants.

Here are five Sharrow Vale businesses that we picked out as classic examples:

Pom Kitchen Cafe and deli - website "Vegetarian & Vegan Food"
Made by Jonty Cafe - website "Brunch-Lovers favourite"
Otto's Moroccan Restaurant - website "with Private Function Room"
Porter Brook Deli Independent delicatessen - website "over 90 different cheeses"
Solo Gallery Craft Shop - GoogleMaps "Contemporary Art & Craft"

Art and History

Have you seen the fantastic street art on Snuff Mill Lane?  Completed by Phlegm street artist for Feature Walls street art festival, this remarkable art can be seen on this Sheffield Favourite Places website or on Google maps.

You’ll notice a good deal of street art around the area’s walls, and it sets a tone for this popular student housing district.

There’s something in the background, air, and feel of this area that only history can impart - did you know, for example, that the Wilsons of Sharrow’s Snuff Mill has been operating beside the Porter Brook since 1798?

The recipe for the famous snuff is still a secret, but this video and these images could give you a few hints - including the remarkable water wheel harnessing water power for milling operations!

Space, Leisure, and Relaxation

Again, we bump into history while looking at nearby green spaces.  The so-called Porter Valley Parks provide large green spaces for you to enjoy - according to Parks and Gardens, these gardens were laid out between about 1855 and 1938!

Bingham Park, Endcliffe Park, Mount Pleasant Park and Forge Dam Park are all premium examples of pleasant spaces where live music and festivals are held, and cricket nets are available to everyone who wish to play.

What about relieving some of your stress at a tennis or squash session at the Hallamshire Tennis Club?

Starting to feel you really can’t cope or need support? The Gold Digger Trust offers wellbeing courses and mental health awareness help on the doorstep as well as support from your university. Why not have a look at their video?

Easy For Travel

Being based here means you can easily access the Sheffield Hallam University Collegiate campus, the University of Sheffield, or the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.  None of the main sites are more than about 30 minutes’ walk or around 15 minutes on the bus.
